Abstract

Background:  Aim of this study, is to correlate the ayurvedic concept of Mahashwasa with special reference to kussmaul’s respiration. Methods: analysis of Mahashwasa according to ayurvedic literature and comparing or correlating it with kussmaul’s respiration with the help of modern science literature. Mahashwasa is type of shwasa vyadhi with characteristic breathing pattern. Kussmaul’s respiration commonly seen in metabolic acidosis also possess characteristic breathing pattern. Discussion: After analysing both ayurvedic and modern science literature the lakshanas and hetus of Mahashwasa stated in ayurvedic texts can be correlated to that of Kussmaul’s respiration. Conclusion: Mahashwasa is Kussmaul’s respiration.
