Abstract

PCOS  (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is not a disease but a syndrome having scanty menses, anovulatory cycles, hirsutism, and insulin resistance in women of reproductive age.The current incidence of PCOS is 5-6%.Some of the women may develop Type II Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension or endometrial cancer in later life and infertility if left untreated. At present conventional treatment for PCOS is hormonal for menstrual disorders, metformin for insulin resistance and clomiphene for ovulation induction. These drugs have their own side effects if used for a longer time. So an alternative therapy can be recommended to these patients which include herbal medicines, lifestyle modifications, diet, and yoga asanas as exercise and stress reliever. Yogasanas boost overall metabolism, increase blood circulation of organs and tissues, help in weight loss, alleviate stress, relaxes mind and body as well. The asanas mentioned mainly have action on female reproductive organs, uterus, ovaries and also on digestion and metabolism.
