Abstract

Food, sleep and celibacy are called the pillars of the body. To explain their importance, they are compared to the pillars of a house. Just as pillars provide stability to a house, similarly these three pillars provide stability to the body. This explains the importance of proper sleep. Due to lack of sleep, Vata and Pitta doshas get aggravated in the body and many disorders arise and insomnia causes dhatu destruction or traction, which leads to body weakness and degeneration related disorders. This review article evaluate the important aspects of sleep disorders as per ayurvedic concepts.
